Abstract

A 60-year-old woman was seen at the department because of a right breast tumor, which invaded skin. Although a chest CT film showed pleural effusion in the right thorax, no malignant cells could be found in the effusion. In addition, there was no distant metastasis in the other organs. After malignant cells were found in the specimen obtained from aspiration biopsy cytology of the breast tumor, a modified radical mastectomy was carried out. Postoperative adjuvant chemoendocrine therapy had no effect on the effusion. Seven months after the operation, a mass in her lower abdomen was noted. Upon operation the abdominal tumor was right ovarian tumor, which was proved to be a theca cell tumor. The removal of the tumor was followed by complete disappearance of the effusion. We made a diagnosis of effusion resulting from true-Meigs' syndrome. In Japan, this is the first case of breast carcinoma with Meigs'syndrome.
