Abstract

We present a case of mucinous cystadenoma of the retroperitoneum. A 76-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of right lower abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasonic tomography and computed tomography showed a right retroperitoneal cystic lesion with calcification. The tumor was 15×12×6cm in size and contained yellow mucinous fluid. Postoperative histological diagnosis was mucinous cystadenoma, because there was columnar epithelium lining and the cyst wall detected by PAS and alcian blue stainings. This case also had right ovarian serous cystoma, but it was thought to have no connection with the retroperitoneal tumor. This retroperitoneal tumor was diagnosed as mucinous cystadenoma of the retroperitoneum.<br> Mucinous cystadenomas and mucinous cystadenocarcinomas of the retroperitoneum are very rare. Only 20 cases have been reported in the Japanese liter ature. Some notes on these cases are also presented.
