We examined 9 cases of carcinoma of the breast in two pregnant and seven lactating women who were treated at the hospital between 1975 and 1966. A total of 938 cases of breast cancer were treated at the hospital in the same period, and these nine subjects represented 0.96% of them. In order to clarify the characteristics of breast cancers in pregnant and lactating women, another women who were matched in age, preoperative stage of the breast cancer and year of the first treatment were selected as control. The mean age of the nine cases was 34.8 years (a range of 29 to 42). The expression of ER was negative in all nine cases, that of PgR was positive in only one case among nine cases and that of EGFR was positive in three cases among five cases. In comparison with control cases, the distribution of staging was almost same. But the mean size of the tumor in pregnant and lactating groups was significantly larger than that of controls. There was no significant difference in the degree of metastasis to lymph nodes. The number of cases negative for ER and PgR was significantly larger in subjected group than the control, but there was no significant difference between both groups in EGFR staining. The prognosis of pregnant and lactating women with breast cancer was significantly poorer than that of control patiewnts. The p value was 0.0002 in generalized Wilcoxon test.
