To clarify the usefulness of electrophysiological studies, we examined the electroencephalogram (EEG) within 24 hours and the auditory brain stem response (ABR) in 3 hours of resuscitation after cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) in patients treated with brain hypothermia (BHT) . Six (86%) of the 7 patients with no V wave in the ABR died, while only 3 (23%) out of 13 patients with V wave died. Eleven patients showed an isoelectric EEG within 24 hours of resuscitation, and only 2 of these 11 patients had a favorable outcome. Also, all of the 5 patients with burst suppression on EEG had an unfavorable outcome. These results suggest in patients resuscitated after cardiopulmonary arrest that electrophysiological findings are useful as early prognostic indicators, except for an isoelectric EEG within 24 hours.
