Abstract

Five cases of pulmonary dirofilariasis are reported. The patients (three men and two women) ranged in age from 48 to 70 years old with a mean of 57.6. <br> Three patients were asymptomatic, but the two remaining patients complained of dry cough. An abnormal shadow on X-ray films was noted in all five cases. As a possibility of malignant tumor could not be ruled out, a partial resection of the lung was performed in all the cases. Histological examinations of the resected specimens revealed dirofilaria worms. Therefore these cases were diagnosed as pulmonary dirofilariasis. All lesions were found to be solitary pulmonary nodules of less than 2 cm in diameter and existed just beneath the pleura. The lesions in three cases were in the lower lung field. Two cases showed spiculation of eccentric type. This finding was considered as an important differential point, because pulmonary adenocarcinoma shows a tendency toward concentric spiculation in most cases. With increasing reported cases of pulmonary dirofilariasis, the disease must be kept in mind as a probable diagnosis when an abnormal shadow is observed on the lung.
