Abstract

To define the age when the patients are designated the elderly as candidates for gastrointestinal operation, consecutive 560 cases operated on for colorectal cancer in a 15-year period from 1984 to 1999 were analyzed for the 5-year and 10-year survival rates. These 560 cases were divided into age groups by every five years according to their ages at the time of operation. The 5- and 10-year survival rates including or excluding deaths from other diseases were compared among the age groups. There was no significant difference among each group in the survival rates when deaths from other causes were excluded.<br> But it was significantly better in the age group under 70, when deaths from other causes were included. The reason did not lie in pre- or post-operative complications, but in a significantly increasing number of patients who died from other diseases in the age group 70, or over. We conclude that the patients of 70 years, or over are designated the elderly, and the indications and the extent of surgery should be decided carefully from them.
