We reviewed the results in 27 cases of carcinoma of the oropharynx (lateral wall) treated by laser alone or combined laser and radiotherapy between 1982 and 1990. The purpose of this treatment was to minimize post-therapeutic functional disorders without lowering the cure rate. Lesions located only in the mucosa were excised by CO2 laser. Lesions involving the muscle were treated with laser excision followed by chemoradiotherapy.1) During a 3-year follow-up, the 3-year control rate of the primary lesion was 100% in Ti and T2 cases, and 66% in T3 and T4 cases.2) Of the 27patients,3 died of primary lesion,2 died of neck metastasis and 7 died of intercurrent diseases. Fifteen patients survived and were free of disease.3) The five-year cumulative survival rate was 100%in Ti,60% in T2,50% in T3 and 33% in T4 cases.4) Posttherapeutic speech intelligibility was high and there were no significant swallowing problems in the majority of the patients.5) Posttherapeutic speech intelligibility decreased and there were some swallowing problems when more than half of the soft palate was resected.
