In Japan, the population is aging rapidly and increasingly. In this situation, the establishment of a system of welfare service, social support for the elderly has become an urgent issue. To provide various kinds of services, communication is very important but most of the elderly have the agerelated hearing impairment.<br>The difficult situations with the hearing impairment and the present status of hearing acuity were investigated by using the method developed by the Social Survey Division of the Office of Population Censuses (OPCS) that had been applied in a survery of disability in Great Britain. The questionnaire and pure tone audiometry were performed five hundred ninety-five people ranging from 65 years and over of age who stayed at a geriatric health service facility.
