Although the incidence of Barrett's esophageal cancer is quite low in Japan so far, it would be expected to increase according to an increase of reflux esophagitis. Recently we experienced a case of early Barrett's esophageal cancer. A 55-year-old man complaining of discomfort of upper abdomen was admitted to the hospital for close examination of esophageal tumor. Esophageal scope revealed early esophageal cancer with the diameter of 1.5cm surrounded by Barrett's mucosa extending 6cm from the esophagogastric junction. Any metestatic lesions were not detected by preoperative studies including CT-scan. The resection of the distal esophagus and proximal stomach, dissection of the nearest lymph nodes and double tract reconstruction was performed through a left thoracotomy and laparotomy on June 6, 1999. Postoperative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged on 27th postoperative day. Pathological examination revealed mucosal adenocarcinoma with Barrett's esophagus (ly0, n0). There have been no signs of recurrence, as of 18 months after the operation. We reviewed 55 japanease early Barrett's esopyageal canrers in terms of treatment procedures.
