A 61-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were admitted to the hospital because of a mass and pain above the umbilicus. In each case, a defect of the fascia above the umbilicus was on palpation, and an abdominal ultranonography and a computed tomography revealed a defect of the linea alba and protrusion of fat tissue in the subcutaneous fat layer. A diagnosis of linea alba hernia was made, and an operation was performed under general anenthesia. Hernia sac was dissected free and inverted into the abdominal cavity. The mesh plug in small size or extra-large size respectively was inserted and fixed with some interrupted sutures, and then a large prolene mesh sheet was spread because of reinforcement. Postoperative course was uneventful and the preoperative abdominal pain disappered in both patients. There have been no signs of recurrence up to now.<br> Linea alba hernia in rare in Japan. There is no standard operative method for the disease and no cases treated by mesh plug technique have been reported as yet. We report two cases with an analysis of 47 cases seen in the Japanese literaure.
