As a basis for the establishment of radiosurgery in insects, the effects of general and local irradiation by heavy ion beams on the development and morphogenesis of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, were examined using the 4th and 5th instar larvae. General irradiation experiments revealed that (1) the 4th instar larvae are more sensitive to irradiation than the 5th instar larvae, (2) the effects of carbon ions are almost identical to those of helium ions, and (3) the survival rates at pupation and adult emergence stages decline depending on the dose of irradiation. On the other hand, local irradiation showed no serious effect on survival rate, but localized effects, such as deletion of antennae and wings, were induced in the adults, depending on the dose and site of the irradiation. Sensitivity to carbon ions in various tissues and organs of the wandering larvae were examined by local irradiation: ovary and testis were the most sensitive (surface dose giving partial damage: 10-40Gy), anlages of external reproductive organs, eye-antennae and wing discs were also sensitive (20-70Gy), but integument (150-175Gy) and nervous system (500-900Gy) showed rather low sensitivity. These results indicate that local irradiation of heavy ion beams is a useful radiosurgery for studying the bio-functions of various tissues and organs in insects.
