This study was designed to clarify the relationship between power required for snow shoveling and physical resources. The subjects were 258 male college freshmen, including 126 from snowy regions of Japan (S group) and 132 from non-snowy regions of Japan (NS group) . All subjects performed fitness tests, including tests of grip strength, back strength and leg extension power, and tests to determine maximal snow throwing distances using 5-kg and 10-kg shovel loads. Despite the fact that there were no significant differences between the two groups in mean values of height, weight, grip strength, back strength and leg extension power, the mean snow throwing distance in the S group was significantly greater than that in the NS group for both a 5-kg shovel load(6.5±1.3 m vs 5.9±1.1 m, p <0.01)and a 10-kg shovel load(4.2±0.77 m vs 3.9±0.76 m, p <0.01). Throwing distances of both 5-kg and 10-kg shovel loads were significantly correlated with physical stature and with fitness parameters. When the subjects in the S group were divided into subgroups according to frequency of performance of snow shoveling, it was found that the results for the subgroup of subjects who regularly did snow shoveling were better than those for the subgroup of subjects who rarely did snow shoveling and those for the NS group. The results indicated that both physical fitness and experience in snow shoveling are factors affecting snow shoveling performance.
