In general, it might be quite difficult to find scientific evidence for prosthetic procedures. To change prosthetic remedies from experience-based to evidence-based, it is essential to establish an objectiveevaluation method for occlusion, since the goal of prosthodontics is to restore good occlusal function. In this article, I present research that was carried out at our department, and show a way to developanalyzing methods that can evaluate occlusion objectively and dynamically, with jaw movement. Wemade it possible to analyze dynamic status of occlusal contact during mastication, by combiningthree-dimensional digitized data of dentition with six degree-of-freedom jaw movement data. Thenwe analyzed functions of occlusal facets during mastication in detail. In that research, occlusal facetswere classified into 6 types, according to the normal vector direction of each facet. We also developeda new method to analyze condylar movement as 3D graphic animation combining three-dimensionalmorphological data from X-ray tomography of the temporomandibular joint with six degree-offreedomjaw movement data. We revealed 2 types of lateral guidance: the Medial facing facetsguiding type (the M type), and the Distal facing facets guiding type (the D type). Results of, ourresearch indicated that D type guiding led the working side condyle backward, and the posterior jointspace became narrower. Further, the concept of the occlusal reference surface, which we reportedpreviously, can be used as a criterion to evaluate occlusal facets quantitatively. To clarify the idealocclusion, it is essential to develop a standard quantitative analyzing method of occlusion for a start, and then to establish evaluation criteria based on epidemiological research and intervention studies. On the other hand, it is also clear that all clinical intervention or treatment in research must beevaluated quantitatively, since treatment results of prosthetic procedures highly depend on the techniqueof each operator.
