Long term production data from two independent installations have shown a 4 to 5% increase in hardwood yield for digesters converted to Lo-SolidsTMcooking. The following paper will present and discuss this data along with the results, to date, from a program aimed at identifying the underlying mechanism responsible for increased yield. As part of this program, a methodology for rapid yield determinations based on chip, pulp, and black liquor testing has been developed. Preliminary results for samples collected from one mill have confirmed a 3 to 4% greater pulp yield for the commercial process as compared to a laboratory generated pulp cooked to the same degree of delignification. This paper concludes with a description of planned future work.
