A 49-year-old male showed a sudden onset of right lower abdominal pain and diarrhea at the end of December, 1995. On admission, he was treated conservatively for approximately three months, however, no remarkable improvement was observed. Barium enama of the small bowel and colorectum showed a 20 cm long segmental marked stricture of the terminal ileum. Under the diagnosis of ischemic stricture of the small bowel, ileocecal resection was performed on March 15 1996. On gross examination, the resected specimen showed a circumferential 20 cm-long ulcer and microscopic examination revealed the characteristic feature of ischemic stricture of the small intestine.<BR>This was considered to be a rare case of ischemic bowel disease and the etiology of this kind of disease is still controversial. It is said that ischemic small bowel enteritis is progressive and results in complete stricture of the affected segment. Therefore, the treatment of this kind of disease should be surgery as soon as correct diagnosis was made. In addition, it is noted that ischemic small bowel enteritis should not be confused with Crohn's disease.
