A trial was conducted to determine the best diet application method, in terms of growth and survival, for feeding an artificial micro particle diet to post-larval abalone Haliotis discus discus (Reeve) . The experiment consisted of three different dietary application treatments that were replicated three times and randomly assigned a 100 mL beaker. The treatments were; artificial micro diet painted onto plates and fixed with an alginate binder (hereafter referred to as ‘Plate’), the diet removed from the plates and placed at the bottom of the beaker (hereafter referred to as ‘F.F.P’), and the diet sprinkled directly into the beaker (hereafter referred to as ‘Direct’) . The final size of post-larvae in the Plate treatment (1064±170μm) was significantly less than the other two treatments; REP (1459±85μm) and Direct (1351±142μm) . The highest specific growth rate of post-larvae was 37.9±2.2μm/d for F.F.P and lowest was 23.8±5.3μm/d for Plate. The post-larval abalone in the Plate treatment had a lower growth rate due to the fact that they did not reattach to the plates, instead choosing to stay on the bottom and sides of the beaker where little food was available. Leaching of nitrogen was reduced by over 50% when using the F.F.P method compared to the Direct method. There was no significant difference (P<0.05) in survival rate of post-larvae (range of 53.3%-70.0%) . F.F.P was the best method for feeding artificial micro particle diet to post-larval H. discus discus.
