Dispersed small droplets occur around ink jet nozzles and contaminate inside of the ink jet printers. It is required to clarify the motion of these small droplets in order to prevent the contamination effectively. In the present study, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was applied to visualize and measure the motion of dispersed small droplets. Airflow and the motion of small ink droplets around ink jet nozzles were measured by PIV when printheads were scanned at 0.57 m/s and 1.14 m/s respectively. It was clarified that the airflow in the area between printheads and a paper depends on scanning velocity of the heads. Dispersed small droplets were observed on the upstream side of the nozzles in scanning direction and it was blown up by the airflow and circulates. The motion depends on the airflow varying with scanning velocity. From these PIV investigations, valuable design information to reduce mist contamination was obtained.
