We report the use of imatinib mesylate to treat bone metastasis involving the right scapula from a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) resected 7 years previously. A 67-year-old man underwent abdominoperitoneal resection of the rectum in 1996, pathologically diagnosed as leiomyosarcoma. In 1998, he underwent right hepatectomy for liver metastasis. In October 2002, he noticed numbness in his right arm. Chest radiography and CT showed a tumor at the right second rib. Following a diagnosis of bone metastasis from the original rectal tumor, radical excision was conducted involving the right first and second ribs. The tumor was c-kit-positive and diagnosed histologically as malignant GIST. Because another metastasis was identified by bone scintigraphy following surgery, he was treated with imatinib mesylate as an outpatient. One year after metastasectomy, he is doing well with no signs of metastasis.
