Mercury has caused many adverse effects on human health and the environment throughout the world. However, its advantageous physical and chemical characteristics have led to its use for many years even despite its dangers. Information about mercury intoxication has been common knowledge for a long time. The main chemical forms of mercury and its compounds are metallic mercury (Hg0), mercurous (Hg2+), and methylmercury (CH3-Hg+) . Toxicity and metabolism are different from its chemical forms. In particular, methylmercury is converted from mercurous, and is a widespread neurotoxicant. Methylmercury is known to be the cause of the infamous Minamata disease, and it is known to bio-accumulate in the environment. Most human exposure to methylmercury is through fish consumption. It easily penetrates into the brain and causes damage to the central nervous system, and is especially damaging to the fetus. This paper summarizes the metabolism and toxicity of mercury and its compounds, especially those of methylmercury. Other recent studies are also summarized here.
