Mass screening using a combination of physical examination and real-time ultrasonographic whole-breast scanning of all individuals over a period of 15 years detected breast cancer in 80 women. Of these 80 breast cancer cases, 32.9% were conscious of mass-subjective symptoms at the time of the examination (hereafter referred to as the subjective group) and 30.8% of this group were confirmed to have axillary lymph-node metastasis (hereafter referred to as ax+). Only 3.7% of the non-subjective group were ax+ and, therefore, we confirmed that the incidence of ax+cases was significantly lower in the non-subjective group than the subjective group. Especially at the every other or more year recipient of the subjective group the ax+ cases abounded significantly occupying 66.7% of them.<BR>The tumor diameters of the non-subjective group were significantly smaller than those of the subjective group and the yearly recipients of the non-subjective group had primary tumors with the smallest diameters of all the women with breast cancer. A characteristic feature revealed by real-time ultrasonographic whole-breast scanning of all the individuals we observed was significant shrinkage of the tumor after a year had elapsed. In particular, we found that the tumor diameters of women under 50 years of age in the non-subjective group had become significantly smaller and, therefore, we fear that mass-screening by physical examination will overlook many cases of non-palpable breast cancer in this group.
