We performed clinico-statistical observation on 199 pediatric patients under 15 years of age with oral and maxillofacial injuries in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hospital Dentistry, Takamatsu Red Cross Hospital during the previous 7 years (1997 to 2003). The conclusions were as follows:
1. The number of injuries in pediatric patients was increasing, averaging 28.4 cases per year.
2. The ratio of male to female patients was 1.7: 1.
3. By age distribution, 1-year-old patients showed a higher rate of incidents than others.
4. The number of patients in October was greater than those of other months.
5. The direct visit was the most common way of consultation.
6. The most frequent diagnosis was soft tissue injuries.
7. 39 cases (24.1% of the patients with soft tissue injuries) required sutures and 17 cases were treated under general anesthesia. Teeth fixations were done in 12 cases (36.4% of the patients with teeth injuries). All cases with fractures were treated conservatively.
