日本に商用の機械翻訳システムが登場してから15年以上経ち, 今日では様々な形態の機械翻訳システムおよび翻訳支援ツールが利用可能になっている。機械翻訳システムによる翻訳については, いぜんとして否定的な意見もあるが, その特性を十分に理解して使用すれば, 非常に有用なツールである。本稿では, ビジネスシーンを対象に, 機械翻訳の有効な活用方法を紹介する。業務における翻訳は, 翻訳者のレベルも, 翻訳の目的も, 翻訳に求められる条件(スピード, コスト, 翻訳品質)も様々である。それぞれの状況に応じてどのようなシステムが最適か, どのような利用方法が有効かについて考察する。また, 急速に需要の高まっている英語以外の言語を対象とする機械翻訳の現状についても言及する。
It has been more than 15 years since Japan's first commercial machine translation system was introduced. Today, various forms of machine translation systems and tools for translation are available. Some people still have a negative view of translation using machine translation systems; however, they are highly beneficial if used with a full understanding of their ability. This paper proposes effective ways to use machine translation systems, aiming at business users. In business translation, translators have various skill levels, objectives are varied, and requirements, including speed, costs and quality, are diverse. In response to each situation, which system is the most appropriate as well as which way to use is the most beneficial are considered. In addition, the present status of machine translation in different languages from English, which is rapidly growing in demand, is also mentioned.
