As industrial products become more diverse and higher in performance, more flexible machining systems are required. The purpose of this study is to develop a multifunctional system whose operation is based on the WEDM (wire electrical discharge machining) method. Since wires have long feeding paths that can readily be available for machining, wire characteristics can be manipulated by surface treatment on the paths. Therefore, by developing a multifunctional system using a wire with additional properties improved surface finishes in WEDM can be achieved. In this study, the basic machining method is WEDM as already mentioned. Grinding and surface treatment by EDM are additional methods that can make the system multifunctional. The following procedure was used: First, for the modification of a WED-machined surface, a wire coated with slurry containing titanium carbide powder suspended in glycerol was used to avoid mixing in hydrocarbon oil. Secondly, for grinding the WED-machined surface, the wire was surface-treated by accretion EDM with titanium green compact in hydrocarbon oil so that titanium carbide would be accreted on the surface. Therefore, it is possible to use different machining methods with the treated wire to improved WED-machined surfaces.
