Seven healthy young males(20-27, average age 21 yrs)were asked to perform 3 stages, that is to say, low, moderate and high intensity, corresponding to 11 (“fairly light”), 13 (“somewhat hard”)and 15 (“hard”) scales in RPE, respectively, of 5-minutes snow shoveling for the purpose of eliciting the relationship between cardio-pulmonary responses and shovel performance. Each.subject was asked to lift-and-throw to remove 0.30 to 0.45 m in depth, 1 m in width, 300 to 400 kg/m3 in density of snow using a 1.1 kg snow shovel 0.76 m in length. Cardio-respiratory variables including the heart rate, VO2, RPE, and productivity variables including shovel performance (kg/min) expressed as mass of lift-and-throw snow per minutes, shovel rate (scoops/min), and the shovel load (kg)were measured. During high stage of snow shoveling, average values in cardio-respiratory variables were 7.6±0.2 Mets in VO2 corresponding to 62±3% peak VO2, 169±6 beats/min in heart rate, corresponding to 93±3% peak heart rate, 16±0.5 in RPE, and productivity variables averaged 19±1.4 scoops/min in shovel rate, 3.7±0.3 kg in shovel load and 70±6kg/min in shovel performance. Positive significant correlation(r=0.718, p<0.001)was observed between shovel performance and VO2 during snow shoveling. However, the relationship was considered to vary by other factor such as shoveling skill or posture of the subjects. It was concluded that cardio-respiratory function was an important determinant of snow shoveling from the fact that increasing rate in VO2 (4.3 to 7.6 Mets, +76%) from low stage to high stage was enlarged in shovel performance (22 to 70 kg/min, +218%).
