We investigated the clinicopathlogical feature of 7 cases (0.64%) of signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) out of 1091 cases of colorectal cancer resected between 1995 and 2004 in our hospital. SRCC cases were compared with 941 cases of well or moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (W/M). There were 3 men and 4 women with a mean age of 72.6 in SRCC. There were no differences between SRCC and W/M in terms of tumor location, macroscopic inspection, or tumor size. All of SRCC patients had an advanced carcinoma with a depth of invasion of ss or deeper, and with lymphatic vessel invasion. Five cases (71.4%) had lymph node metastasis, and 2 cases (28.6%) had peritoneal dissemination which is more frequent than W/M, but no cases of SRCC demonstrated liver metastasis. The 3- and 5- year survival rates of SRCC cases were 21.4% and 0%. SRCC is more invasive cancer than W/M well differentiated cancer and has a very poor prognosis. Curative resection for SRCC could improve the prognosis, but this is difficult to achieve. More investigations about new chemotherapy for SRCC are needed to improve the poor prognosis.
