The objective of the present study was to collect data on the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound mass-screening for breast cancer to investigate its effectiveness. We sent questionnaires to 31 representative institutions conducting breast cancer screening in Japan. Eighteen (58%) of these institutions returned the questionnaire and seven (23%) stated that they conducted ultrasound mass-screening for breast cancer. All seven institutions conducted annual screening, but not biennial screening, but only two reported sensitivity and specificity, in which false negativity was detected by methods other than a “population-based cancer registry”. The sensitivity of annual combined mass-screening involving physical examination and ultrasound was 75. 0% and 93. 5%, respectively, and the corresponding specificity was 99.8% and 92.9%, respectively.<BR>Our results suggest that more data are needed to investigate the usefulness of ultrasound mass-screening for breast cancer in women aged 40 to 49.
