Abstract

By using the observational data obtained from the Arctic region, the effects of the dominant shapes of composed crystals, horizontal size distribution, degree of circularity of projection images of snow particles, and meteorological elements on dry new snow density were statistically analyzed. Moreover, the compressive viscosity of dry new snow was observed for several dominant crystal shapes of the snowfall particles.
The new snow density had a strong relation mainly with the dominant shapes of the composed crystals and the mean precipitation intensity. The regression equations of new snow densityρ(kg/m3)to the mean precipitation intensity R (mm/h), which are statistically significant, were obtained for several dominant crystal shapes of the snowfall particles.
For the compressive viscosity η(Pa·s)of new snow, regression equations of new snow densityρ(kg/m3)toη, which are statistically significant, were obtained for several dominant crystal shapes ofthe snowfall particles.
