Abstract
This paper presents a case of intussusception caused by the reversed normal cecum resulting from stenosis due to cecal cancer in an adult.
A 68-year-old woman complaining of abdominal pain was referred to the hospital with a diagnosis of intussusception. On admission to the hospital, a well movable tumor with the size of an egg was palpated in the right lower quadrant of abdomen. Intermittent abdominal pain persisted after admission. Intussusception caused by a submucosal tumor was diagnosed and the patient was operated on. Upon laparotomy intussusception caused by the cecum was identified, and a hard tumor was palpable in the cecum when the intussusception was reduced manually. We suspected cecal cancer and performed an ileocecal excison with dissection of group 3 lymph nodes. The excised material showed a type 2 tumor on the contralateral side of the Bauhin valve. It was inferred that the type 2 tumor caused stenosis in the cecum resulting in reversion of the normal cecum which looked like a submucosal tumor.
Although a great number of cases of intussusception caused by a tumorous lesion have been reported so far, the condition caused by the reversed normal cecum is rare. We report this case of intussusception caused by such a rare cause.
