Abstract

Patients with HCV serotype 2 have better response to interferon therapy than serotype 1, but the duration of therapy required is still controversial. 103 chronic hepatitis C patients received interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin in our hospital. 17 cases (serotype 1; 9, serotype 2; 8) discontinued the therapy within 20 weeks because of adverse evens. Sustained virological response was obtained in all falling off cases of serotype 2 (8/8), on the other hand, only one case of serotype 1 (1/9). The shortest duration of the therapy for serotype 2 was only 5weeks. We suggest that combination therapy with interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin for serotype 2 could be shortened to 16 weeks.<br>
