Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a new DICOM viewer for oral and maxillofacial regions that could be linked to an electronic medical record (EMR), hospital information system (HIS), radiology information system (RIS), and picture archiving and communication system (PACS). A DICOM gateway software to convert images from a digital dental imaging system using an imaging plate (YCR21, Yoshida, Tokyo, Japan) was developed. When the setting position of an imaging plate (IP) in an intra-oral IP packet is set, it reflects the dental formula regarding the teeth automatically. The patient information is referred to DICOM worklist of the RIS. Accordingly, the DICOM image file contained the information of the patient and the teeth with the image data scanned from the IP. Then, the DICOM image file with an accession number was stored to a DICOM image management server. In addition to that, a DICOM viewer for oral and maxillofacial regions with multiformat, multiwindow and multiflame displays was also developed. Therefore, plural images obtained separately could be observed on the same screen or plural screens. Intra-oral and/or extra-oral images with a maximum 5×4 matrix could be displayed on the same screen simultaneously. Full-mouth intra-oral (10 images in a series) and panoramic images could be observed simultaneously, too. The intra-oral images with a 5×2 matrix were displayed on the top of the screen and the panoramic image was displayed on the bottom of the screen. It was concluded that the new DICOM viewer for oral and maxillofacial regions was more useful than the medical DICOM viewer for a full digital radiographic system in the oral and maxillofacial regions.
