The possibility for release and scattering of asbestos fibers rises when waste-containing asbestos is treated at MSW Treatment Facilities (bulk waste crushing and incineration facilities) and when it is moved about on waste collection vehicles. Even when measures have been taken so that wastes cannot easily be released, the tendency for asbestos fibers to be dispersed is great.<BR>Investigations were conducted to reveal the level of asbestos fiber being released and scattered from MSW treatment facilities and from collection vehicles. Two cases were studied. In one case, asbestos-containing wastes were added to general waste and in the other, asbestos-containing wastes were not added.<BR>Measurement results of asbestos fiber concentration at all sampling points (effluent gas and air extractor, and so on) were lower than the reference criteria. These results show that the level of asbestos fibers being dispersed does not rise according to how asbestos-containing waste has been treated.<BR>Present treatment methods are effective in preventing the release of asbestos fibers from the facilities through appropriate countermeasures such as removal of particles by a ventilator, bagfilter or some other device.
