Abstract

This is an urgent study with a focus on determining proper detoxification and removal conditions for asbestos wastes, and for demonstrating the destruction of asbestos wastes in the actual treatment facilities. The objectives of this study are as follows : to demonstrate high-temperature melting treatment of asbestos wastes using plant-scale actual treatment facilities ; to examine generation and emission control of asbestos fibers during crushing processes of industrial wastes ; to describe the behavior of asbestos in municipal waste treatment systems; and to develop analytical methods for the determination of asbestos in treated materials and related samples. From the results, it was confirmed that asbestos fibers do not remain in melting slag obtained by high-temperature melting, and the levels of asbestos in emission gas samples could be adequately reduced. As for the behavior of asbestos in an industrial waste crushing facility, the levels of asbestos in air sampled near the crushing devices exceeded regulation levels in several cases. The levels of asbestos in the flue gases, however, could be reduced to lower levels using sufficient emission control measures such as bag filter filtration.
