Abstract

A model was developed for calculating the cost and amount of CO2 emissions in the collection and transport involved in the recycling of plastic containers and packaging (except PET bottles) . These municipal solid waste calculations were done according to household density and collection areas. The model considers three specific steps: sorted collection, baling, and transportation to the designated recycling companies. For sorted collection, the Grid City Model was expanded to incorporate geographical distribution of collection blocks (Probability Distribution City Model) .<BR>The PDCM shows that both the unit CO2 emissions and the unit cost decrease with an increase in the household density rate or a decrease in area. The unit CO2 emissions and the unit cost from sorted collections are almost equal, compared to mixed collections, as long as the frequency of collections remains unchanged. Even if an additional transportation of 200 km is assumed in the last step, the total unit CO2 emissions from the three steps is about 5% that of the carbon content for plastic containers and packaging.
