Incineration residues such as fly ash and bottom ash should be recycled for use in a landfill. In recycling fly ash, much attention must be paid to dioxins or heavy metals in the fly ash. In this research, we mechanochemically treat fly ash with blast furnace (BF) slag to use fly ash as a cement resource. Reported here is degradation behavior of dioxins in fly ash caused by mechanochemical (MC) treatment, and the elution property of lead (Pb) and alkali from a cemented solid made of fly ash treated by MC treatment with BF slag and an additive.<BR>The concentration of dioxins in fly ash decreased from 9ng-TEQ/g to 30 pg-TEQ/g by 4 h-MC treatment, and no dioxins was detected after 8 h. The process of MC treatment and cementation completely inhibited Pb elution from fly ash. A possible inhibition mechanism might be that Pb compounds were changed into different forms and stabilized during hydration by the process of treatment. pH in eluate from MC cemented solid was suppressed to 8-9. These results suggested that fly ash treated with BF slag mechanochemically is usable as cement material.
