Coupling of Alkylarene and Pentamethylfullerene by Iridium-catalyzed Benzylic C-H Bond Activation

Heating of C<SUB>60</SUB>Me<SUB>5</SUB>Br in toluene in the presence of an iridium catalyst and triethylamine results in benzylation of the fullerene core to yield C<SUB>60</SUB>Me<SUB>5</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>5</SUB>. The reaction is general for various alkylarenes, and probably takes place via iridium-catalyzed activation of a benzylic C–H bond.
