Abstract

Colon metastasis from breast cancer is extremely rare. We report herein a case of colon metastasis from invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast. A 45-year-old woman was seen at the hospital because of abdominal pain and vomiting, and was diagnosed as having intestinal obstruction. Both radiological and endoscopic examinations revealed complete stenosis of the descending colon. Although no malignancy was detected in the biopsy specimens, laparotomy was performed under a diagnosis of primary or metastatic colon cancer. Besides tumors of the descending colon, multiple tumors of the intestine, lymph node metastasis and disseminated diseases were seen. Radical surgery was considered impossible so that palliative resection of the colon was performed to release intestinal obstruction. Immunohistochemical studies confirmed that the tumor was colon metastasis from breast cancer. Hormonal therapy was initiated, with a resultant SD. She is alive, as of 9 months after the operation. The onset of abdominal symptoms in a patient with a history of breast cancer should prompt the physician to rule out the possibility of intestinal metastases. Surgery combined with hormonal therapy and/or chemotherapy may result in long-term remission, if intestinal metastases have occurred.
