Abstract

A 78-year-old mowan with a one-month history of dysphagia was referred to the hospital with a diagnosis of an esophageal diverticulum. After admission gastrointestinal radiography revealed a 9×6cm diverticulum with the base width of 3.5cm in the right wall of the middle thoracic segment of the esophagus. The patient underwent diverticulectomy by thoracoscopic surgery. The removed tissue was histopathologically classified as pseudodiverticulum. It appeared to be pulsion diverticulum. Although esophageal diverticulum is not uncommon, it is asymptomatic in most cases and rarely becomes a candidate for surgery. Recently, we have seen some reports of the esophageal diverticulectomy by thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery. We report this case of the huge esophageal diverticulum, which was resected safely by thoracoscopic surgery with combinant use of gastroendoscope having the large diameter.
