Abstract

Case 1: A 66-year-old man was found to have hepatic lesions in medical examination, which were diagnosed as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with tumor thrombus in the inferior vena cava (IVC). He underwent liver resection and extirpation of the tumor in the IVC under total hepatic vascular occlusion, and it was found that the tumor in the IVC was floating with a pedicle attached to the venous wall. The IVC tumor was diagnosed as hematogenous metastasis to the IVC wall on histopathological examination. Case 2: A 73-year-old man underwent liver resection for HCC with underlying chronic hepatitis B. Five years later, bone and multiple lung metastases appeared, accompanied by a mass in the right atrium, which was found to be a metastasis to the IVC wall derived from tumor thrombus at autopsy. We report two cases of HCC with metastasis to the IVC and review the literature.<br>
