We compared effective concentrations of 2-phenoxyethanol and FA100 anesthetics in nine fish species: yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, red sea bream, Pagrus major, skipjack, Trachurus japonicus, purplish amberjack, Seriola dumerili, striped jack, Pseudocaranx dentex, Japanese flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes, Japanese stingfish, Sebastes inermis, and black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. The effective concentration was determined from time to anesthesia, recovery time, and survival after anesthesia. Effective concentrations of 2-phenoxyethanol ranged from 200 to 1000 μl/l, while FA100 had a narrower range, 100 to 500μ l/l. The recovery time and survival of fish anesthetized with 2-phenoxyethanol were superior to those of fish anesthetized with FA100. In addition, FA100 caused serious foaming of seawater, but 2-phenoxyethanol did not. These results suggest that 2-phenoxyethanol is an excellent candidate anesthetic for fish cultured in Japan.
