Abstract

Using the method of DeLury, the initial population size (N0) of marine juvenile ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis altivelis) in the eastern coastal waters of Kii Channel was estimated as 376-4949 (×104) from 1991 to 2004. Annual estimations of the initial population size (N0) fluctuated widely, indicating that the stock is in an unstable condition. Exploitation rate (C/N0) ranged from 0.65 to 0.87, and was over 0.7 in most years. Significant positive correlations were found between the initial population size (N0) and total catch in number of individuals (C), as well as between the initial population size (N0) and remaining number of individuals (N0-C) . As the annual quantity of down-wept ayu larvae in the Hidaka River increased the following year's initial population size (N0) tended to increase. These results suggest that increasing the quantity of down-wept larvae and catch control of juveniles are effective to maintain stability of the stock.
