Abstract
To create a good urban form, it is significant to correlate buildings, streets and open spaces. This paper aims to clarify a comprehensive methodology of urban space design through analysis of a residential development project on the master plan and spatial structure. The case is Makuhari Baytown, a newly developed 8900-unit residential district in Chiba coastal area, which created harmonious urban space with housing blocks of middle, high and super-high rise along grid street pattern and belts of open space. While the master plan, design guidelines and design coordination have been said to be key, the master plan played a fundamental role to give a background to the others and to form a framework of collaboration of urban planning, architecture, civil engineering and landscape design.
