Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the costs and benefits resulting from implementation of a recycling waste policy, based on material balance, in Nagoya City. From the viewpoint of total waste treatment, the recycling policy (i. e. a request for households to separate specified recyclable waste) lead to a decrease in deposited, incinerated, and land-filled waste, while at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Nagoya City. It is also possible to experience economic benefits since, for example, investments in new landfill deposits are avoided. More specifically, in the case of PET bottle (one of the specified recycling materials) costs, benefits and greenhouse gas emissions can be more thoroughly estimated using GPLS (Green Production & Logistics Simulator) to compare several different scenarios. These scenarios might include years without any recycling activity, as well as years with a variety of recycling activities.
