Abstract

Quality control of breast cancer ultrasonography screening aims at high sensitivity in the detection of abnormal findings, and presentation of characteristic imaging features that are universally obtainable without interobserver difference. We present details of our own trial on how to manage ultrasound instrumentation, ultrasound imaging technology, and practical procedures conducted at our clinic.
As mass screening must be carried out efficiently on many participants with high rates of detection of abnormal features within a limited time, some reduction of image quality is inevitable. We tried controlling the machine settings, particularly (1) the main frequency of the probe, (2) gain, (3) dynamic range and AGC, (4) STC and (5) focusing. Since the probe must always be oriented vertically to the skin surface, care must be taken to ensure that the screenee adopts a correct posture, the examiner maintains a stable position, and that the use of conductant jelly and the movement speed of the probe are appropriate. By adding an adaptor to the probe, we were able to obtain high-quality figures easily and constantly.
High-quality ultrasonography screening still depends to a large degree on an examiner's skill and experience. Development of standard settings for ultrasonography machine instrumentation and techniques for ultrasound imaging is important in order to obtain objective findings without differences among participating institutions.
