Abstract

City compacting is discussed from the viewpoint of infrastructure maintenance cost and energy saving in contrast to city sprawling in our country. The total population of our country has come to show a downward trend after the peak of 2005. It is necessary to examine the distribution of future population and to induce compact cities. In this study, we define city compacting as increase in population density. First, we forecast the distribution of future population based on mesh system whose size was about 1km2. The results showed further city sprawling which would be leading to higher infrastructure maintenance cost and energy consumption. Second, we developed city compacting scenario, then compared local road maintenance cost in each scenario. The results showed the reduction in cost would amount to about 69 billion Japanese yen annually.
