抄録

In recent years, there have been reports of large-scale illegal dumping of waste. In 1999, the largest illegal dumping case was discovered at the border of Iwate and Aomori prefectures, in an approximately 900, 000m³ area.<BR>In light of this discovery, Aomori Prefecture conducted a three-year fact finding investigation (2000 - 2002) to examine the condition of the polluted areas.<BR>Based on the results of this investigation, the terrain of the polluted areas, and the type and scope of the waste, it was decided that measures designed to prevent the spread of pollution must be made highest priority. The waste in the area must now be removed and properly disposed of, and the natural condition of the land must then be restored.<BR>From 2004 to 2006, several projects including reinforcement of shielding membranes and construction of mechanisms for water leakage disposal were carried out as measures for preventing the spread of pollution in the prefecture. In 2007, as these efforts near completion, proper methods of waste removal and disposal will begin. This project is expected to be complete by 2012.
