Abstract

Pharmacoeconomic research guidelines serve a variety of purposes in different countries. In the United States, for example, the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy provides guidelines on formulary management by medical institutions and managed care organizations. A study was therefore made on the potential for use and need for standardization of pharmacoeconomics from the point of view of medical management. This consisted of a questionnaire survey of the chief pharmacists of all medical institutions enrolled in the Japan Hospital Pharmacists Association. Questionnaires were faxed to recipients on February 13, 2006, and an analysis performed on responses received by February 27. Faxes were sent to a total of 5,756 facilities, and responses received from 803 (yielding a response rate of 14.0%). It was found that whereas over 50% of facilities wanted comparisons applicable to their own model less than 30% of hospitals have the arrangements in place to submit the data required for such analyses, thus revealing a mismatch between needs and reality. It was also concluded that standardization of analyses is required in order to enable critical reviews of the results of studies on the medical frontline. In order to perform analyses from the perspective of medical institutions, it is important that arrangements be put in place to develop the necessary data.
