Abstract
Acoustic analysis by capturing snoring sounds can allow us to objectively evaluate the degree or cause of sleep respiratory disturbances. In the current study, sleeping conditions were recorded with a home video camera and carbon monoxide levels in the blood were simultaneously monitored by pulse oximeter, in 9 pediatric patients. Associations were investigated between age, sex, degree of adenoid growth and hyperplasia of the palatine tonsils, and the results of simple monitoring by pulse oximeter, and the waveform patterns of acoustic analysis using the data recorded by home video camera.<br> The results suggested that a waveform pattern showing an increase in the noise component can be observed on the sound spectrogram with which the snoring sounds are analyzed when the pulse oximetry result is abnormal. Since the number of cases was limited, there were no statistically significant differences. However, close associations of the acoustic analysis with 3%ODI, 4%ODI, and SpO2<90% were observed, and there were significant differences among them. These findings suggest that the results of acoustic analysis by home video camera can serve to estimate the severity of sleep respiratory disturbances, and that there may be statistically significant differences if the number of cases is increased.
