Abstract

In our endoscopic examinations for screening patients of esophageal cancer, 8 superficial hypopharyngeal cancer lesions were detected in 7 patients. Average age of the patients was 70.5, and all the patients were male. The lesions included 6 protruding lesions, one erosive lesion and one iodine unstained lesion. All were squamous cell carcinomas. As treatment, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR-C) and argon plasma coagulation were indicated for 7 lesions, and radiotherapy was indicated for the other lesion because of its vast distribution. No complications were encountered with EMR-C but recurrence took place in 2 cases (one with cervical lymph node metastasis and the other with liver and lung metastases) up to 41 months after treatment. These findings showed that EMR-C can preserve the post-treatment function of the organ, but difficulty of the requisite skills and long-term prognosis after treatment need to be further examined.
