The packing density of Ru(bpy)3 units was shown to be a crucial factor in constructing thin films having reversible redox functions. We have succeeded in controlling the surface of Ru(bpy)3 thin films using a bottom-up fabrication procedure. The redox function of the resulting multilayered films is highly predictable and reliable, although the productivity of the stepwise film growth of <B>1</B> is not high.
