Abstract

Spotted parrot fish Oplegnathus punctatus were reared from hatching to 40 days to examine the technical feasibility of mass seedling production of this species in Chichi jima, one of the Ogasawara Islands. Normally developing eggs collected from the spawning tank were stocked into three transparent 1 m3 round tanks at a density of about 30, 000 eggs/m3. Hatched larvae were fed on rotifers, Artemia nauplii, formula feeds and frozen copepoda in progression with their growth. Water temperature during rearing ranged from 21.1 to 25.9°C. Newly hatched larvae measured 3.50 mm in TL, and grew to 5.28 mm on day 10, 8.17 mm on day 20, 14.07 mm on day 30 and 20.83 mm on day 40. Swimbladder inflation of the larvae started from day 4 and most of the larvae completed the Swimbladder inflation by day 5. Yolk and oil globule were mostly absorbed by the time when the larvae attained 3.80 mm in TL on day 3 and they began to eat rotifers. The larvae were observed to eat Artemia nauplii from 4.60 mm, formula feeds from 11.23 mm and frozen copepoda from 15.00 mm in TL. Swimming behaviour changed gradually from passive transportation with the water movement to limited forward movement at about 8-9 mm in TL to an active, multidirectional swimming at about 12 mm in TL. The number of juveniles harvested on day 40 was 37, 326. Survival rates in the three tanks ranged 22.6-56.6% (mean 41.5%) . These juveniles were healthy and had low incidence of deformations (4.3%) .<BR>Therefore, by using this technique, mass seedling production of the species became possible every year in Chichi-jima.
